Energy-efficiency was the key to the lighting strategy. Light bulbs, such as LEDs, have been selected to optimize energy while providing a high level of aesthetic ambience in the exterior and interior areas.

In the service areas of the building, we have installed occupancy sensors to turn off the lights when Team Members are not present. Our building uses a building automation system that monitors and optimizes heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting levels to constantly provide optimal indoor conditions while utilizing energy efficiently.

A sophisticated heating and cooling system installed in the property utilizes energy efficient equipment. The property uses enthalpy wheels to recover cool or warm air in the building exhaust to help pre-cool and pre-heat the incoming fresh air and cut down on energy use.

Double glazed low-e windows on property reduce noise and halve the heat that normally comes through the windows. Cooling system strategically turns off mechanical refrigeration and uses outside air or cool water from cooling towers to reduce the cooling energy.

The property has increased the amount of ventilation air entering the building to provide guest and Team Members with improved air quality.

There are on property stops for public transportation and 12 bus arrival and departure bays to reduce personal vehicle use. The property is connected to the City of Bethlehem Greenway, a former rail-track that has been converted to a bike path, creating a huge potential for pedestrian and bicycling.

Our new carpeting meets the testing and product requirements of the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus program. These steps reduce the quantity of indoor polluting contaminants.
We adhere to environmentally sensitive indoor air quality guidelines that include utilizing paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and cleaning products with low VOC (volatile organic compound) content.

We provide bicycle racks for Team Members and guests. We also have close access to a variety of public transportation options. We installed a building management system for monitoring carbon monoxide content in our parking garages to ensure carbon monoxide will not accumulate and provide a safe environment for guests.

Many areas are equipped with carbon dioxide monitors to achieve the best balance between air quality and energy efficiency. Indoor air quality is constantly monitored to ensure a pleasurable guest experience.

The property established an extensive storm water management program featuring the use of bioswales, which are utilized to limit the quantity and improve the quality of storm water runoff from the site.

Water efficient fixtures are utilized in all restrooms reducing the amount of water wasted down the drain.

With our Eco-Linen program, our guests choose when to replenish their linens and towels. We implemented new technologies to achieve water use reduction versus traditional laundry operation. We use detergents that carry the EPA’s DfE (Designed for the Environment) Certification.

Redeveloping the Bethlehem Steel brownfield site has a tremendous positive environmental impact compared to the development of a new greenfield site. The Bethlehem Steel property was remediated in accordance with the site-specific standards established under the Pennsylvania Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act.

During demolition, over 22,500 tons of steel was sent to local recyclers.

During construction, the project utilized extensive construction waste recycling programs to further benefit the environment. In operation, the resort features an extensive recycling program for both front and back of house.

The property utilized environmentally friendly concrete for all driving surfaces in the parking garage. All reinforcement material used within the concrete was manufactured from recycled steel.

Almost 14,500 tons of steel used for this project came from domestic companies with a good portion coming from the same company where the steel from the Bethlehem Steel site was shipped for recycling.

The site uses materials with high recycled content sourced from local manufacturers, and specifies materials with low potential to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Our robust recycling program saves natural resources and landfill space.

  • 2,500 pounds of waste is saved yearly through the reuse of holiday poinsettia plants.
  • 50 tons of cardboard is recycled each month.
  • 1,038,160 pounds of material recycled in 2012
  • 40% of our solid waste stream is recycled. This includes glass, plastics, aluminum, cardboard, and paper.
  • Our outdated computers and other electronic equipment are either donated to local charities or recycled properly

  • We have high standards for our food and beverage management that protect our natural resources.
  • We’re happy to serve you food you can feel good about.
  • Waste vegetable oil and grease trap contents are converted to fuel, compost, and clean water.
  • For events and conventions, we can purchase seafood according to guidelines, such as the Marine Stewardship Council, Monterey Bay Watch, and Blue Ocean programs.
  • Vegetarian and organic options are available on all menus.
  • We offer organic, Fair Trade, shade-grown coffee.

We take great pride in our world-class resorts and we also take great pride in being a world-class citizen. Our resorts are involved in a number of socially responsible programs.

We are partnered with Clean the World Foundation, a charitable organization that, through a sanitization process, recycles discarded soap and shampoo products to those who need it most around the world.

We have a special place in our hearts for the students of Donegan Elementary – a school that we’ve adopted over the past several years. In conjunction with the Bethlehem Area School District, we’re especially proud to support a program that teaches leadership skills to students through engaging in school activities that build a strong sense of belonging and community.

Via of the Lehigh Valley is a non-profit human service agency that provides services for children and adults with disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. We have partnered with Via on an annual clothing drive and gift giveaways.

We want our Team Members to feel informed, engaged, and excited about sustainability, so we inspire them to both communicate our environmental values to guests and apply these values to their personal lives. In doing so, we increase Team Member motivation and morale, and foster a greater sense of connection to the company. All of this benefits our business as well as the environment.
